In March 2024, the government announced the IndiaAI mission to establish a comprehensive AI ecosystem to harness the power and potential of AI across sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals.
At the same time, tech companies are stepping up to support this vision. OPPO India—at the forefront of this movement—is committed to democratising AI for all users. At the recent launch of the Reno12 Series in India, Peter Dohyung Lee, Head of Product Strategy at OPPO, highlighted the company's dedication to enhancing the AI experience. Lee announced plans to introduce over 100 GenAI features by year-end, reinforcing the brand's vision of "AI for All". The Reno12 Series marks a significant milestone in this journey, bringing advanced AI capabilities to a broader audience and aligning with India's goal of becoming a global AI powerhouse.
Let’s delve into OPPO’s latest offerings.
Some edited excerpts.
How does OPPO perceive the future of AI in smartphones?
Peter Dohyung Lee: We are at the cusp of evolution in mobile technology where hardware, software and communication infrastructure have come together to make AI a distinct possibility in mobile devices. From smartphones, we are now moving towards a future of intelligent devices. AI is not just going to be an added layer to your mobile device, it will be native to your phone’s central experience. Instead of relying on downloaded apps, we foresee a future where AI devices have intelligent, adaptive systems that understand and predict our needs. It will be intuitive, and context aware.
What is OPPO doing to democratise AI technology?
Peter Dohyung Lee: OPPO is committed to make AI phones accessible to everyone and the recent launch of Reno12 series is reflective of our efforts in this direction. Earlier this year, we established the OPPO AI Center to pursue dedicated research and development into AI. We have already filed over 5,600 patent applications globally in AI and are integrating GenAI features across all our product lines. We have also collaborated with partners such as Google, Microsoft, MediaTek and Qualcomm to usher in a new era of AI Phones. We anticipate around 50 million users globally to benefit from these innovative AI features by the end of this year.
What do you think is the opportunity for AI-enabled smartphones in India?
Peter Dohyung Lee: According to the WEF, India’s AI market is projected to touch $17 billion by 2027. The country has one of the largest consumer bases for AI - over a billion mobile phone users, and one of the youngest populations that is driving faster adoption of AI. While there exists an opportunity, I would also like to laud the efforts of the Indian Government towards nurturing this young talent through initiatives like the ‘IndiaAI Mission’.
How will the new Reno12 series unleash the next generation of AI features for users in India?
Peter Dohyung Lee: The new Reno12 series—the Reno12 5G and Reno12 Pro 5G—marks the first launch by OPPO India towards democratising AI. Reno already is a preferred brand in India, and Reno12, which brings the most number of AI features in its price bracket, will add to its popularity. We call these devices ‘Your Everyday AI Companion’ and it lives up to its promise of bringing a host of GenAI features that boost productivity, efficiency and creativity.
