MWC 2017: Samsung’s computing devices are geared for productivity
Samsung is trying to take on Microsoft and Apple with its own tablet convertible with a big screen, removable keyboard and the famous S-Pen
The big surprise from Samsung’s stables at this year’s Mobile World Congress is not a smartphone, but a tablet and a convertible computing device. The tablet called the Tab S3 runs on Android and has a screen size of 9.7 inches. The convertible called the Galaxy Book runs on Windows 10 and will be available in 10.6-inch and 12-inch display sizes.
Samsung is yet to announce the price or date of availability of Galaxy Book. The Galaxy Tab S3 will be available in the UK from 31 March, and its price as well as global availability is yet to be announced.
The Galaxy Book is the first Windows 10 tablet made by Samsung. It is clearly inspired by the Microsoft Surface Pro series of devices and has a very similar detachable keyboard which also doubles up as display cover. It has got equally powerful innards—Intel’s 7th Gen Core i5 processor, paired with 4GB RAM in both 64GB and 128GB SSD variants.
The 10.6-inch variant of Galaxy Book has a LCD display with screen resolution of 1,920x1,080p and runs on Intel’s M series processor with 4GB RAM. The 12.6-inch model uses an AMOLED panel and offers screen resolution of 2,560x1,440p.
Samsung has thrown in its famous stylus called the S-pen which has a 0.7mm thin tip designed for better pressure sensitivity and to allow a more natural writing experience to the user. The tablet has a unibody metal finish and a very sleek (7.4mm) profile too.
The Galaxy Book will be competing directly with the Surface Pro 4 which offers a 12-inch display, a detachable keyboard worth Rs11,999 and a stylus pen. The Surface pro 4 with Intel M series and 4GB RAM is priced at Rs63,490 and the Intel Core i5 variant with 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD is priced at Rs71,990.
The Galaxy Tab S3 runs the latest Android Nougat and is powered by Qualcomm’s high performance Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor clubbed with 4GB RAM, making it the most powerful Android tablet so far. Its closest rival is going to be the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro, which runs on Intel Atom X5-Z8500 processor and has a 10-inch display. It is selling at Rs37,990.
The S3 Tab has a 9.7-inch AMOLED screen with screen resolution of 2,048x1536p. It offers 32GB internal storage and can put up another 256GB via microSD card. Despite the slim profile (6mm) and light (429g) form factor, this metal-clad tablet packs in a mammoth 6,000mAh battery.
The Samsung event was interrupted by protestors from NGO Green Peace which wanted to put pressure on the South Korean company to speed up the recycling process of the over 2 million recalled units of Samsung Galaxy Note 7.
