Mobile World Congress 2016: LG CAM Plus bolts on physical controls to the G5

While this accessory doesn't enhance the picture quality, it does make it a lot more convenient to click photos with the phone

Camera-based accessories are quite popular with smartphone users. They can be attached to the smartphone to enhance the photo-capturing capabilities. And when not required they can be put away. Sony started the trend with its Lens-Style Camera, which worked with all Sony Xperia Z-series smartphones. Now, LG has a come up with a camera-based accessory, called CAM Plus, which currently works only with its latest flagship smartphone, the LG G5.

The CAM Plus accessory enables access to a host of dedicated physical buttons (available usually in point-and-shoot and DSLR cameras) to a LG G5 user. It includes a shutter key, zoom dial, power button and keys for recording videos. Simply put, a user won’t have to go through the camera interface on the phone’s touch screen for basic tasks.

Interestingly, the CAM Plus also has an additional 1,200 mAh battery, which adds on to the 2,800 mAh built-in battery in the phone. To install it you need to pull out the base panel of the G5, and plug in the CAM Plus.

The module is thicker than the smartphone. This gives the smartphone a slightly bumped-up appearance, making it easier to hold while taking a photo or recording a video. This will particularly improve the grip over the smartphone when it’s held in the landscape mode.

LG’s new smartphone accessory is a bit limited in terms of capability if you compare it with the Sony Lens-Style Camera, which was itself a camera that connected to the phone via Bluetooth. However, it remains a handy option for those photography enthusiasts who will buy the LG G5. A lot, of course, would depend on the price of the accessory—which is yet to be announced.
