Game Review: PES 2017 is more fun than FIFA Mobile

Konami has managed to get most things right with its latest football simulation game on mobile

The PES 2017 requires 1.1GB of space for the game files and another 245MB for the commentary.

FIFA Mobile, the football game for smartphone platforms, was a major letdown for many football fans who are into football simulation games. Unlike its predecessor FIFA 16, it was a modest looking game, suffered from connectivity issues and missed on some basic elements.

Konami’s new PES 2017 for mobile doesn’t have the license to use the official club names, jerseys and stadiums of top football leagues like the Premier League, but it offers a challenging gameplay, better controls and more features.

Like FIFA Mobile it is an online game and requires seamless internet connection, but has a bigger file size. While the FIFA Mobile takes up only 162MB of space after installation, the PES 2017 requires 1.1GB of space for the game files and another 245MB for the commentary. The commentary pack is optional and can be downloaded in the game later.

PES 2017 uses touch based gestures to control players.

Engaging gameplay, great controls

PES 2017 is everything the FIFA Mobile isn’t when it comes to gameplay. Unlike the latter which misses out on some key game elements like a full match involving attack and defence, PES 2017 allows user to play a full game of football controlling each and every aspect of the game from team selection to player movement. The game modes include Campaign of ten matches, Friendly matches and Events based on an ongoing tournament form real world football. All matches are played against custom teams created by other users, which makes it a proper multi-player game. It also has a offline two player mode which allows users in the same room to play against each other over Bluetooth.

What actually makes the PES 2017 really addictive is the game controls. Instead of adding on screen controls which feel unnameable on small screen, PES 2017 uses touch based gestures to control players. However, it has been implemented in a much better manner than FIFA Mobile. The entire left side of the screen serves as the joystick to control player movement, while tapping and holding the finger anywhere on the right side of the screen makes the player sprint. To command player to shoot, one needs to double tap on the screen. The game follows the same Ultimate Team model used by EA Sports in FIFA games now. You can build your team from scratch and hire players, managers and other staff. The game rewards players with in game currency after every match. The currency comes in handy for buying new players, training them and renewing their contract. You can speed up things using real money trough in app purchases.

The feature which gives it an edge over its rival is the Highlights mode.

Simple graphics, great audio

The PES 2017 has a bigger file size, yet doesn’t look or feel superior to the FIFA Mobile. The option to switch between wide, long and mid-range allows user to adjust the game’s interface according to the phone’s screen size. This makes it easier for users to play it on phones with smaller screens. The feature which gives it an edge over its rival is the Highlights mode. It is a regular feature in PES games on console and allows users to see the game highlights after every game.

The commentary packs in PES 2017 sound as detailed and filling as the commentary on the console variant.

The game modes include Campaign of ten matches, Friendly matches and Events based on an ongoing tournament form real world football.

PES 2017 is far from perfect but its intuitive controls, challenging gameplay and the two player mode makes it one of the best additions to the football genre on mobile. The game is currently available in beta only on Android in select countries.
