An inconsistent Coolpad Note 3s camera delivers only in patches

Coolpad Note 3s' camera is a mixed bag but can deliver good shots in well-lit conditions

The inconsistencies in terms of colour reproduction even in day light shots is one of its big limitations.

Coolpad’s latest budget smartphone Note 3s misses out on some key elements and specifications. However, packs in a 13-megapixel camera with a stack of cool filters and handy camera modes. Though the phone’s interface marks a shift to plain Android interface the camera app continues to offer the goodies the Coolpad camera phones are known for. The live filter option shows what an image would like with each filter. A few camera modes such as night, video, pro and beauty are placed on the home page, while some such as Long Exposure, Panorama, GIF are placed on a hidden page accessible through the menu icon.

Closeup daytime

In this shot, the background looks properly lit. The darker shades of pink in the flower and the green in the background have been captured well. The finer details of the petals in the flower look distinct and even on a bigger screen the amount of detail it was able to output looks good.

Close-up low-light

Like most budget smartphones, low-light photography is a weak point of the Note 3s too. This is a close-up shot taken under low light. The amount of noise in the picture is clearly visible. The camera has managed to capture the prominent colours in the statue very well, but due to the noise some of the darker colours like the brown of the base are barely visible.

Landscape

The camera struggles again to get the darker colours right. The green in the background looks too dark. However, the blue colours of the sky and the yellow in building look natural. The level of detailing is good enough for big screen. The windows of the top storey are clearly visible.

Street View

Unlike the earlier shot, this image has multiple objects. While the area under the focus (the area around the shops) has captured well, and looks clear even on a big screen, the rest of the objects look blurry and poorly lit. Even the darker colours in some of objects such as the green in the trees look hazy.

Food

While colours in food even in low light looks impressive, the camera hasn’t been able to lock focus on all the areas. The reflection of the oil has been captured well, though.

The Coolapd Note 3s’ camera is inconsistent. Its ability to capture detail put it at par with some its rivals, but the inconsistencies in terms of colour reproduction even in day light shots is one of its big limitations. Low-light photo photography is not one of its strong points.
