New features will make Snapseed photo edits more dramatic

Snapseed is one Google app that doesn’t see regular updates. Mostly because it’s simplicity was unmatched, and this made it the default image editing app choice for millions of smartphone users globally. However, a new year and a new approach. Google has rolled out the first major update of the year for Snapseed, and the focus is on adding a dash of seriousness to the entire fun approach that the app focused on thus far.

The big addition is the feature known as “curves". These curves give a user much finer control over settings such as brightness levels and colours in different parts of a photo, and allows for much deeper and specific editing. Incidentally, curves are quite popular in most desktop photo editing applications. Considering the fact that many users may not be proficient or familiar with the concept of curves while editing photos, the new Snapseed app has also added a bunch of presets to get you started quickly. If you do use the curves, you can open an image and select the curve editing mode, and drag the curve lines around to see what sort of difference moving them around makes.

The second big feature is the face detection capabilities in the feature called Face filter. In case the Snapseed algorithm initially fails to detect faces in a photo, you can now ask it to try harder.

In the Text tool, all multi-line styles now let the user choose where to wrap lines. There have also been improvements to the grain quality in the black and white mode.

This update comes at a time when the photo editing app space on iOS and Android is becoming quite populated, and users have far too many options to choose from. As always, Snapseed remains free to download and use. Google is now rolling out the latest Snapseed updates for Apple iOS and Google’s own Android devices.
