One of the advantages of using Android OS over any other mobile OS is that it allows higher level of customisations. However, browsing through the Play Store for the right set of icon pack, widget, launcher, keyboard and wallpaper apps can be a tiring process.

This is where Google’s new website, myAndroid Taste Test, can help Android users find what they are looking for in a few simple steps. The Taste Test program can be accessed on any smartphone and desktop browser free of cost. The program works by asking users a series of questions and provides suggestions based on their answers.

How it works

To access the platform, type myAndroid Taste Test in the search or enter the url www.android.com/myandroid/taste-test/#/in in the browser address bar on your smartphone or desktop. The website shows a bunch of 22 questions involving lots of graphics. These questions not only take into account users’ choice of colour, shape, texture, and animation but their hobbies as well. So if you are a music buff who likes a lively interface, the program will suggest icon packs with vibrant design, nature based wallpapers and sound related widgets which will make finding music easier. For an avid news reader looking for a minimalistic interface, it will suggest wallpapers with photos inspired by real life, as well as news and weather widgets for updates. The options on offer are interesting but after a while we found that it keeps shuffling through the same set of suggestions, because obviously Google wants to sell you its own apps also. For example, Google’s Gboard came up as the keyboard suggestion and Google News & Weather as news widget suggestion most of the time.

The suggestions are accompanied by a few images of the launcher, keyboard, and icon packs to provide users a glimpse of what they will look like in a phone. If the user likes any of the suggestion, they can click on the download button. It will redirect the user to the Play Store from where they can get more information and finally download the app that offers these personalisation.

myAndroidTaste Test is designed for Android users who don’t have the time or patience to search and try new customisation tools and apps on their own. However, it needs some more improvements so it can provide more suggestions to users instead of repeating the same set of options.
