Bollywood actresses try their hands at production with varying degrees of success

Anushka Sharma is one of the few female actors backing some of her own projects. Here's a look 10 others who took the plunge in producing films

New Delhi: Anushka Sharma-starrer Phillauri that opened to 4.02 crore on Friday has been co-produced by the actor along with Fox Star Studios. In an industry that’s gradually beginning to see its women as more than props to the male lead, Sharma is one of the few female actors backing some of her own projects. Here are 10 others who took the plunge.

1.Hema Malini: Malini has produced films like Dil Aashna Hai (1992) and Tell Me O Kkhuda (2011), both of which she also directed. The former made Rs1.25 crore at the box office while the latter earned Rs1.28 crore.

2.Pooja Bhatt: One of the first female actor-producers of her generation, Bhatt forayed into production with critically acclaimed drama Tamanna in 1997 under the banner Pooja Bhatt Productions. She later launched the Fisheye Network with Sur (2002). The former made about a crore at the box office while the latter earned about Rs70 lakh.

3.Juhi Chawla: Chawla had co-founded a production house called Dreamz Unlimited with friends Shah Rukh Khan and Aziz Mirza in the late 1990s. Their first production Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000), starring Khan and Chawla in lead roles and directed by Mirza, was a satire on Indian media that made Rs9 crore in box-office collections.

4.Manisha Koirala: Koirala produced the low-budget caper comedy Paisa Vasool in 2004. The film that featured her in the lead along with Sushmita Sen made 46 lakh at the box office.

5.Malaika Arora-Khan: The film and television personality has produced the Dabangg franchise along with husband Arbaaz Khan. The two movies have made Rs138 crore and Rs155 crore in box-office collections, respectively.

6.Lara Dutta: Dutta co-produced the road film Chalo Dilli (2011) along with husband Mahesh Bhupathi and Eros International. Featuring her in the lead along with Vinay Pathak, the film made 9 crore in box-office collections.

7.Dia Mirza: Mirza co-owns a production house called Born Free Entertainment along with husband Sahil Sangha. They produced a romantic film called Love Breakups Zindagi (2011) directed by Sangha and co-produced with friend and actor Zayed Khan. The film that featured Mirza and Khan in the lead roles netted a little over a crore at the box office.

8.Preity Zinta: In 2013, the actor produced romantic film Ishkq in Paris under her banner, PZNZ Media. The film that also featured her in the title role earned Rs1.87 crore in box-office collections.

9.Shilpa Shetty: Shetty and husband Raj Kundra co-produced crime action film Dishkiyaoon along with Eros International in 2014. The Harman Baweja-starrer made 5 crore at the box office.

10.Priyanka Chopra: Chopra recently founded her production house Purple Pebble Pictures with the aim to produce small-budget, content-driven films and promote new talent. The company has backed regional projects including Ventilator (Marathi) and Sarvann (Punjabi) up till now.
