‘Awaara’ to ‘Dangal’, 10 Indian films that were released in China

New Delhi: Director S.S. Rajamouli’s much-awaited war epic Baahubali 2: The Conclusion that releases this week is, among many other languages, being dubbed in Mandarin and is likely to be screened in China. The neighbouring country, which has long enticed Bollywood with its massive screen count of nearly 40,000, has seen the release of quite a few big-ticket Indian films over the years. Here are 10 such movies.

Awaara (1951): The Raj Kapoor classic is one of China’s earliest introductions to Indian cinema. The film that co-starred Nargis is remembered for the iconic Awaara Hoon song across the Indian subcontinent, including China, as well as in countries like Russia.

3 Idiots (2009): Rajkumar Hirani’s comedy drama stars Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan and R. Madhavan in lead roles. It made about Rs16 crore in China.

My Name Is Khan (2010): In recent years, the Karan Johar drama was the first Indian film to be released in China. The film, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, made Rs50 lakh in box-office collections there.

Delhi Safari (2012): The 3D computer animated comedy directed by Nikhil Advani made about Rs10.65 crore in China. The bilingual that won the National Award for Best Animated Film that year features the voices of Akshaye Khanna, Govinda, Sunil Shetty, Boman Irani and Urmila Matondkar.

Dhoom 3 (2013): The third instalment of Yash Raj Films’ action thriller franchise features Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Katrina Kaif. It earned Rs24 crore in box-office collections in China.

PK (2014): Aamir Khan’s satirical take on religion helmed by Rajkumar Hirani is the highest-grossing Indian film in China. It made Rs123 crore after a strategically planned and promoted release in the country.

Happy New Year (2014): Shah Rukh Khan’s musical heist comedy featured Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan and Sonu Sood along with him in lead roles. The film made about Rs1.68 crore in China.

Baahubali: The Beginning (2015): The first part to Rajamouli’s by-now iconic war epic franchise had secured about 6,000 screens in China and managed Rs7 crore in collections. The film stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati and Anushka Shetty in lead roles.

Fan (2016): Maneesh Sharma’s psychological thriller was released in China to a slightly tepid response. The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer made Rs1.49 crore in the country.

Dangal (2016): Aamir Khan’s blockbuster wrestling drama is all set to release in China as Shuaijiao Baba (Let’s Wrestle, Father). The film emerged as the highest Bollywood grosser in India last year, making Rs387 crore in lifetime box-office collections.
